Do Americans Really Want a Smaller Government?

As the midterm elections approach, many conservative Americans are making the Tea Party-style argument that the U.S. government should be small, localized, and as personally unobtrusive as possible.

But according to a new survey by The Washington Post, the Henry J. Kaiser Family Foundation and Harvard University, many who take that position also hold positions inconsistent with a small-government mindset.

The study, which surveyed 2,054 randomly-selected adults between Sept. 22 and Oct. 5, indicates that most Americans who would like to see a more limited government also call Medicare and Social Security "very important" programs, according to the Washington Post. The Post also reports that most of those surveyed want the federal government to remain involved in education, poverty reduction and health care regulation.

A majority of respondents who said they support the Tea Party do object in some way to the current health care reform legislation. But 50 percent or more also supported equal or more federal involvement in areas like poverty reduction.

Overall, the poll found that nine in ten Americans believed issues like Medicare, Social Security, national defense, food stamps, education, unemployment benefits, or environmental protection were at least moderately important.

Despite what appears to be bipartisan support for a number of specific federal programs, members of the GOP spoke negatively about the national government on a broader level. More than four in ten of those polled gave the Washington a grade of "D" or "F," and 80 percent of Republicans said they thought the government's priorities were misplaced.

Fifty-five percent of all voters thought national leadership was ignoring major issues, and similar percentages said the government is misusing tax money and does not share their values, the Post reports.

A new USA TODAY/Gallup Poll also showed mistrust of the government. Six in ten of those surveyed for that study believed the government is too powerful, and nearly half agreed with the statement: "The federal government poses an immediate threat to the rights and freedom of ordinary citizens."

Legislating health care was the most frequently invoked example of "something the federal government is doing that it shouldn't be doing," with 18 percent citing it. But the same poll indicates that nearly six in ten think the government should ensure that all Americans are granted adequate health care.

Public opinion on the effectiveness of federal programs has ultimately not changed very much in the last ten years, numbers indicate. According to the Post, "perhaps the biggest change over the past decade is the growing partisan gap."

The US Government is of the People, by the People, and for the People. It was NOT intended to enrich a small portion of the populous and ignore the majority as we?ve all experienced with the GOP Conservative Agenda.

"But according to a new survey by The Washington Post, the Henry J. Kaiser Family Foundation and Harvard University". The Washington Post and Harvard are Democrat friendly entities; I don't know much about the Kaiser Family Foundation, but the 2 entities I mentioned are certainly not friendly to conservative thought. This year the federal government spent $1.47 trillion more than we have, giving the US a staggering $13.3 national debt. It has to be obvious that we can not afford the federal programs that we currently have. We are headed for an economic collapse if we do not reduce the federal government to a manageable size; and we have to replace a lot of the irresponsible leaders we have, in order to do that. I want the federal government to focus on a few things, and do them well. Leave the rest up to the discretion of the states (not having the federal government force programs upon the states - like the health care bill). We have to get back to a limited federal government and a balanced budget. Promised made, have to be kept (people who were forced to pay into Medicare and Social Security should be able to retain this coverage), but we need other options for younger Americans. Many states have to operate (by law) on a balanced budget. So should the federal government.

I think I may have been polled for this. I don't think the options for answers gave the respondents a full range of options, but were designed for a narrow outcome that indicated that people don't really want smaller government. I'm suspicious of the method, because the poll I participated in certainly did not allow me to fully express my preferences.

They never do my friend. Same question was done by the GOP controlled media like News max or Fox News, the question was; would we include into health care the 40.000.000 uninsured - including illegal aliens. I could not answer that question because I'm for to include 40 Mill. uninsured Americans but against to include illegal aliens, they are illegal and shouldn't be there in the first place. But you see, they playing with American people each party formulate question so the answers would fit theirs party goal. Neither party work for the American people they work for themselves.

The biggest problem are GOP brain washed people who think that they can sit on two chairs at the same time. It seams to me that American people want the smallest government and at the same time, according to survey, most Americans who would like to see a more limited government also call Medicare and Social Security "very important" programs, and most of those surveyed want the federal government to remain involved in education, poverty reduction and health care regulation. France, UK and most of the European and world countries all ready have and enjoy all this. The Americans need to eliminate the word "Socialism" out of theirs vocabulary and not allow to be intimidated by it by some radical GOP members or powerful media like FOX News , as the "socialism" has nothing to do with better health care for all the Americans or pregnant woman's or women that just gave the birth to have some time off of work and still get paid ....and not worry if they will still have the job when they return to work. That isn't socialism, that is right to work and right to live better...

the european countries are cutting drastically its socialist safety nets. The only poll that counts will be in nov. I'll give you a hint, EVERYONE WILL KNOW WHERE THE AMERICAN PEOPLE WANTS TO TAKE OUR COUNTRY.

Yes they do, but thous are not, as you call them "socialist safety nets" thus are the benefits all working people deserve to have not only the rich. And even after "drastic" cutting Europeans Singaporeans, Australians and many other will still have health insurance even if unemployed or change the job, secured jobs after they were sick and were out for several weeks, paid 4 or more weeks vacations that y 99% of European do go to some destination for vacation rather than siting at home as most Americans do and that is because most of them do not get paid vacation and can't afford to go to Bahamas or Europe or other destinations as Europeans do. And that have nothing to do with socialism. If you didn't know communism & Socialism died long time ago even Cuba is slowly changing but you people don't see that. You can call it socialistic all you want but the fact will remain, French, English and most of the EU people will still have "100% free" health care and no worry to loose theirs homes if need to have open hart surgery. American on the other hand even with the good health insurance as most of them paid only 80% have to sell their house to pay 20 % or die on the street if don't have any insurance. I live 6 months in US and 6 months in Croatia. Poor country but with good hospitals and health insurance. I pay about 280 kn ( $ 40 ) per month. In past 5 years I had 3 major surgery Prostate, Knee and stomach and didn't pay a dime for it. My teeth look like when I was 25 and didn't have to pay more than $20 per tooth.

I wonder how much we could save by eliminating the internet connections to all govt workers. Think of the porn charges we would be saving.
